VOLUNETEER CERTIFICATIONS

Thank you for volunteering with the Halifax Hawks. We want you to know that we support and value all our coaches, managers, safety people and dressing room monitors.

We also want to stress that it is the responsibility of the volunteer first to ensure their certifications are up to date. The Hawks want to set you up for success, but it begins with you.

Select member, view profile, select the qualifications tab. A list of courses will be displayed that have been completed including expiry and renewal dates.

 

The deadline for coaching, volunteer, saftey volunteers, managers and any additional bench staff is December 1, 2025. However we recommend that as soon as you are added to a team, you begin to acquire your certifications

Roles & Certifications by position for  ALL volunteers

  • All coaches and bench staff (managers, dressing room monitors) are require to complete a specific set of certifications
  • HNS has an updated list of courses for each volunteer position at each level to view the qualifications required - https://hockeynovascotia.ca/coach/coaching-requirements/
  • Coaching Clinic Schedule - https://page.spordle.com/hns/clinics. ALL CLINICS ARE COMPLETED ONLINE.
  • HNS tracks all volunteers certifications and has a team in place to ensure all documents submitted to them are applied to the appropriate volunteer's account on the Hockey Canada Registry.

Definitions
  • Coach (head coach/assistant coach) or On Ice Volunteer  - Coach means a head coach or assistant coach or on ice volunteer and is defined as someone who is both on the bench during games and on the ice during practices. 
  • Trainer - A trainer is a person who is on the bench during the games to attend to any injuries. A trainer is on the bench or in the rink during practices as well – but does not go on the ice to help with practices. Must be HU-Online Safety certified. 
  • Manager - A manager is someone who volunteers to help out a team with booking ice time, submitting tournament applications, making travel plans, coordinating team budgets and fundraising events, and other administrative tasks. This person does not go on the bench during games and does not go on the ice during practices.
  • Dressing Room Monitor: Someone who is listed on the official team roster and is used for assistance with the Rule of Two in the dressing room before and after games (this role can be covered by coaches who are already assigned to the team).

Coach Limits by Level:

Competitive & Recreation (U11 - U23) - 4 coaches, 1 manager, 2 dressing room monitors (the role can be covered by coaches)

Teams will be charged the certification cost for coaches and managers above these limits who are not registered to other teams.

Additional Information

  • Coaches must be 16 years of age to take a coaching course
  • Coaches 16 or 17 years of age which to volunteer by complete all certifications with the exception of the Criminal Record Check & Vulnerable Sector Search. 
  • Players wishing to assist with younger teams are permitted to do so if they are currently registered and playing on a team for the current season. These player/coaches are not permitted to be on the ice or in the dressing room alone with players and must wear full gear while on the ice.
