Hawks Land Acknowledgement

"The Halifax Hawks Minor Hockey Association acknowledges that we play hockey on Mi’kma’ki, the unceded and ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people. This territory is covered by the “Treaties of Peace and Friendship” which Mi’kmaq and Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) Peoples first signed with the British Crown in 1725. We are all treaty people.

The Halifax Hawks recognize that our past includes a misrepresentation of an indigenous person’s likeness, without permission or consultation as a logo, and we acknowledge this may have caused harm. We commit to continuing to take steps towards reconciliation and making hockey a safe and inclusive game for all."

 Crafting our land acknowledgement.

The HHMHA would like to extend their sincere thanks the Mi’kmaq Sports Council on their support and especially to Levi Denny (Eskasoni First Nation) who serves as the Mi'kmaw Sports Performance Coordinator with Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey and was a member of the HNS Diversity & Inclusion Task Force for his guidance, wisdom and support.

The Land Acknowledgement will be housed permanently on our website and social media and is expected to be used at all HHMHA facilitated presentations, trainings, and tournaments.
